Doing our part!

Tonight I was sucked into watching American Idol. And I am so glad I was. It was probably one of the most important shows that I will see this year.
My heart was torn apart when I saw the 12 year old boy, caring for his sister in a one room home. His parents had died and they had nothing, and no one to care for them. But they went to school everyday.
There were so many children without all the luxuries that I have. And all the things that I think are a given. It has really made me take a long look at myself. I have been moping around for days. I have a new boss who is into micro managing. He is really getting on my nerves. But that is nothing compared to the suffering of these kids.
There are children in the US with nothing as well. Yet there are hundreds of couples who are childless and go thru expensive infertility treatments to have a baby. When we have so many sweet children who need love.
I have found my reason to quit smoking. I am going to take my cigarette money and sponsor a child. I make pretty good money and I should do something good with it. I may not go to Africa and stop malaria, but I can help others do that.
I can not save the world, but I can save an innocent child from suffering, and you can too! You can sponsor and actual child, give to a women's shelter, give to the red cross.
If you are going to give to a charity, make sure it is a legitimate one. Check them out. I have added charity links to my blog with the hopes that others will give too.
Remember it is better to give than to receive. And if I can put shoes on a child and make sure they have something to eat for dinner, then I will have my reward.

I used to work for Geographic Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. We did research on infectious and parasitic diseases in third world countries. I will never forget one of our trainees from Sierra Leone telling me about his wife being pregnant and when she went into labor they had to walk through a swamp to get to the midwife to delivery her baby. Can you imagine a woman in the United States having to do that?

Or listening to one of the physicians from there tell me how wasteful we are here in the U.S. He said he saw a man in a car eating at KFC and the man threw half the food out the window on the ground. A dog came along and sniffed it and walked away. He said if that had happened in his country, the kids would be fighting over the food on the ground. What a wake up call. I made a conscious attempt to watch what I did after that and take note of others as well.

We also provided advice for people traveling to other countries. I went to the local school where my kids attended and asked the kids who did the dishes in their family. Most of them did the dishes. I said, okay, you hate it don't you? Most of them said, Yes. I said, what if you had to take a couple of buckets and walk a mile to the lake or river, get the water and carry those two buckets back so you could do the dishes. What would you think about that. I just saw a bunch of open mouths. I told them how lucky, and lazy, we are here in the U.S. and we comlpain so much when we have all the luxuries that others countries don't have.

Thank you for your post. I loved it.
